Consumer Guide

Common pitfalls can trip up any consumer if they are not careful. That is why it is important for consumers to remain vigilant in their pursuit for the best deals. In the interior design field there are some common dangers that a consumer should look out for.

As with most professions there are regulations, exams and standards that make the profession uniform. Many areas call for the designers to be licensed, registered or certified in some way. When choosing an interior designer look into what the local government requirements are for them. If an interior designer meets these requirements then odds are there will be a much more pleasant working relationship. The main reason why these certifications are important are because the certifications cover important safety and code regulations for certain areas. For example an interior designer should know if a certain type of an appliance is too much wattage for the electrical lines. If the wrong type of appliance is placed in a home there is a serious risk of fire.

Meet the interior designer face to face. This will allow you to make sure that you can choose a designer that is going to be loyal to your design. Some designers put more value in the firm's furniture that is on showcase rather than what is desired by the client. Make sure that before any paperwork is signed that you and the designer have a clear understanding of the style that is desired. Your designer should show a loyalty to you and your design.

Sometimes the estimated amount in the budget does not include taxes and other fees. Make sure that all fees, taxes etc are covered and listed. Also be sure to ask for a fixed fee when it comes to rates. Some design firms will charge an hourly rate for their services. This can become extremely expensive in the end making the cost far more than it needs to be.

Paying attention to the details will help ensure that the deal is successful. There are many reputable interior designers on the market that will make the experience of redesigning a home a pleasant experience. However, not everyone is nice; and the designer may not be of the highest integrity. Check out everything possible with the designer before choosing to sign with them. If they are reputable they will not mind showing all of their certifications.
