Decorating a Child's Room

The world of a child is unique, mystical and full of imagination. It's only natural that a child's bedroom should reflect this world. In decorating a child's room keeping this frame of mind is key in creating the theme of the room.

Consider what the child likes in decorating their room. If a child is not fond of clowns then it is probably pointless (if not foolish) to decorate a child's room around the theme of clowns. Look at what the child likes - is it fairies, dolls, cars, outer pace, sports, flowers etc? Another thing to keep in mind is that the room itself should be child friendly. Furniture needs to be sturdy; most children have a desire to jump on their beds so you don't want one that will break. The floors should be stain resistant if they are carpets and easy wash if they are tile or hard wood. It is of the utmost importance that the paints that are used are washable in the event that the little Picasso-in-training mistakes the walls of their room for their canvas.

Traditional rooms for boys are usually themed around sports, cars or outer space. Some less traditional rooms would be super hero style. Decorating the child's room like it is a super hero haven or with all of the child's favorite super heroes is an idea they are sure to love. Whimsical art is always an option too or even the child's favorite cartoon. It sometimes seems like designing a boys room can be limited to a few things but really the possibilities are only limited by the combined imaginations of the child and the parents.

Little Girls rooms have the traditional pink or pastels. Fairies seem to be a popular theme in decorating a child's room. Having a mural of angels on the ceiling creates a comforting imaginative environment. Another possibility is a garden theme. Having wallpaper of a garden up about half way around the room with butterflies and other such lovely items can make any little girls room seem like their own secret garden.

In decorating a child's room the room's theme doesn't necessarily have to be so divided into boy or girl. Other themes are available for bedrooms. Such as a Hawaiian/Tropical room, this can be used for wither a boy or a girl. When it comes to themes such as these in decorating a child's room the accessories make the room. What the child chooses to put in there will make it seem more suited for a boy or a girl. The exception to this is if the room is painted in a colour that is clearly defined as one that represents a certain gender. For example pink is for girls, blue is for boys. Children are very sensitive to these colour representations.

When decorating a child's room talk to the child to get their interests and involve them in the decorating process. This will help them learn and grow, appreciating their new room more.
