The main question about themes is where to start. Picking out a theme is not as hard as it may seem. Choosing a style or theme for home décor consists mainly of organizing a person's likes in such a way that it reflects that person's personality in their home. Thus making their home more comfortable for them. To begin this process it is best for the person doing the designing to take an inventory of what the person likes. Do they like things from the Asian culture, Sci-fi tech things or the great outdoors? The list could be endless.
Once a basic inventory of what the person likes has been collected then moving forward with the theme is possible. Having a theme based around a persons likes will help keep the design focused and on track with what the owner wants. For example if a person likes the country outdoor life then a country or a rustic theme would be best for them. The one that likes Science fiction can have a décor that is modern and sleek.
A theme or style can be carried throughout the home or it can be varied from room to room. Such as the family room and adjoining kitchen can have a tropical feel but the living room dining room combination can be retro circa 1950's. Sometimes if a person has more than one area that they like then the multiple themes through out the home is the best option to go with. These multiple themes can create quite the eclectic style. The only caution with this would be to be aware of what you are doing to avoid becoming cluttered.
The basic beginning of decorating is to create a style based around the persons like. Style really should be as unique as the person themselves. It is not stylish to have a home that is a copy of everyone else's. The style should be made into the persons
own and not a cookie cutter replica of what the latest trend is. Creating a style for a person's home is really only limited to imagination and what they like. Since it would be pointless to make a high tech modern décor in the home of a person who prefers country chic for their style. A home should be something that the owner can relax and enjoy that is what makes up the style of a home.
